Guilty Pleasure
Sometimes I feel like what is the point of having weeks of paid vacation and sick days if you feel too guilty to use them. I was scheduled to take off Monday and Tuesday this week to handle some personal issues. Still yesterday I spent several hours troubleshooting work issues from home and here I am today blogging from my cubicle. It’s funny because I rushed to get into the office this morning to assuage the guilt I was feeling for taking the whole day off. But of course I get here and there is absolutely nothing going on (hence the fact I’m blogging and catching up on emails). So now I’ve traded in my guilty-leisurely central park afternoon picnic for severe sun deprivation and a computer headache (I’m still searching for the logic behind this decision).
I know this is not an uncommon issue among working individuals. I have friends who would rather work themselves into a coma than take a half day, let along a full day of vacation. But honestly, this complex is rather new to me and I’m not sure where it’s coming from or how to cope. I am a firm believer that taking time off is important, how do you deal with the guilt that sometimes comes with it?
